Antigua Guatemala is quaint relatively small town of about 35,000 inhabitants and other than having lots of other Spanish language students walking around it is a very pleasant city and Ruby and I really enjoy our walks all over the city taking in the architecture, getting a flavor for the people, the food and the people. I try to find more of the side streets and out of the way places both to stay away from all the other mostly English speaking tourists and to get more a a sense of what the real people are like, their homes, businesses, etc.
Ruby and I have walked a lot but not all of the town as we explore as many of the side streets as possible and we are still discovering more new places, sights and smells.
I’ve put in a few shots to give you and idea.
The weather has been the only somewhat down side as it is much colder, gray overcast and rainy than I expected. I’ve become very acclimated to the heat of El Salvador and the coast and so I’m used to a “low” at night of about 30ºc/85f and here we get down to about 10ºc/50f !! brrrrrrrr so Ruby, not too happy about the timing of the removal of her fur coat, snuggle very close at nights to keep warm. I’m realizing just how much of a warm weather guy I’ve become and how much I love the sun. Also missing being on the water and getting to swim every day. however this experience is fabulous and I’m enjoying ever moment of it
This morning we awoke to a beautifully sunny and almost hot day. Sunday’s our host takes the day off from cooking so we look after our own meals and this morning we met up with the other two students; David and Yisha, who are staying here and found a fabulous rooftop cafe for breakfast overlooking Antigua. As you can see from these pictures it is a very picturesque town snuggled in the bowl of the surrounding lush mountains and volcanoes. That is David (from Germany) sitting where we had breakfast this morning and behind him is the church of San Francisco.
This afternoon and evening it has been back to rain and a good thunder and lightening storm so very glad to have been out to enjoy the morning. I’m here for another week and then next weekend we’re off to beautiful Lake Atitlan and the towns of Panajachel and San Marcos. More as it all happens.
